Assistant Director for Digital Engagement and Operations

The Assistant Director for Digital Engagement and Operations is an integral member of the New Student Orientation team and reports to the Director of New Student Orientation. The Assistant Director provides functional leadership for the design, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of comprehensive orientation experiences, which includes management of digital orientation curriculum; facilitating departmental assessment efforts; managing orientation communications and digital engagement; and directing the operational planning and execution of in-person orientation sessions. Working with a high level of autonomy, the Assistant Director collaborates with partners across Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and other University units to coordinate digital content and communications, usage of facilities, staffing, and program delivery. The Assistant Director also supervises temporary graduate and undergraduate staff and supports their training, performance, professional development, and successful execution of assigned responsibilities. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Coordinate Orientation Logistical Operations and Program Execution (35%) 

  • Assist the Director in operationalizing, strategizing, and enhancing orientation programs to create exceptional transition experiences that align with intended outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary operational lead overseeing the logistical management of in-person orientation sessions (including space reservations, materials, personnel, and other essential program functions).
  • Manage essential orientation platforms and technologies, which may include Slate, Guidebook, Anthology, learning-management systems, and other digital resources.
  • In collaboration with NSO staff, serve as lead for the student and guest registration process, including on-site credentialing and participant-support processes.
  • Develop and execute internal and external communication protocols for staff members, volunteers, presenters, and campus partners.
  • Support responsible management of orientation expenditures, inventory, contracts, and program resources in accordance with University policies.

Facilitate Orientation Curriculum, Assessment, and Continuous Improvement (30%) 

  • Lead the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the digital curriculum associated with New Student Orientation.
  • Collaborate with the Director, departmental colleagues, and campus partners to develop online orientation content that is engaging, accessible, accurate, and intentionally designed to support established student learning and transition outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain a holistic curriculum map that identifies learning outcomes, delivery methods and relevant timelines.
  • Coordinate departmental assessment efforts, including the development and administration of surveys, learning measures, participation reports, partner feedback processes, and other evaluation tools.
  • Analyze and transform quantitative and qualitative data into actionable recommendations that address emerging trends, gaps, barriers, and opportunities for program/process improvement.
  • Maintain assessment records, annual reports, curriculum documentation, and evidence of changes implemented through the continuous-improvement process.

Manage Orientation Communications and Digital Engagement (20%)

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive digital engagement plan for incoming students, supporters, campus partners, volunteers, and other orientation constituents.
  • Create, coordinate, and distribute orientation content through communication channels that may include: Email campaigns, websites, webinars, print publications, and other multimedia platforms.
  • In collaboration with NSO staff, manage departmental communication platforms to ensure that constituent questions receive timely, coordinated, professional responses.
  • Serve as liaison for campus partners regarding content submissions, presentation expectations, deadlines, and program changes.
  • Review and edit communication material to meet relevant accessibility standards and to ensure consistency in branding, terminology, and visual presentation.
  • Track engagement with digital communications and develop data-informed recommendations to enhance impact and reach across audiences and platforms.

Supervise and Develop Temporary Staff (15%) 

  • In collaboration with NSO staff, coordinate the selection, hiring, training, and supervision of temporary undergraduate student employees, practicum students, and other assigned program staff.
  • Develop and facilitate on-boarding experiences that establish clear performance expectations, responsibilities, practices, and standards of service for temporary staff.
  • Provide regular guidance, coaching, feedback, and developmental support to temporary staff.
  • In collaboration with NSO staff, coordinate staff assignments and schedules to ensure adequate coverage of operational responsibilities.
  • Maintain appropriate performance documentation and comply with federal, state, University, Division, and unit-specific policies and procedures related to student and temporary employment.

 

A successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:

 

  • Knowledge of student affairs, student development, transition, and student-success principles and practices.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and make timely operational decisions while maintaining appropriate communication and coordination with the Director and other departmental leaders.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly in written and verbal formats across diverse audiences and organizational contexts.
  • Ability to develop engaging and accessible digital resources in alignment with best practices for curriculum development and learning outcomes.
  • Ability to demonstrate technological literacy across digital communication platforms, learning-management systems, and digital design tools (i.e., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.)
  • Ability to develop assessment tools, analyze quantitative and qualitative information, interpret findings, and translate results into program improvements.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong project-management skills in the context of large-scale programming, including the ability to establish timelines, coordinate interdependent tasks, manage competing priorities, and achieve deliverable deadlines.
  • Ability to manage budgets, human resources, and program materials responsibly in line with relevant University system policies.
  • Ability to recruit, train, supervise and develop temporary staff while maintaining clear expectations, appropriate documentation, and compliance with relevant employment policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel, instructional design, education, communications, or a related field preferred.

Three or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in orientation, transition programs, student affairs, enrollment management, large-scale program administration, or a related functional area is preferred.
